Snøhetta has revealed a visual of its
Shanghai Grand Opera House design. The bold architecture features a spiraling roof that connects the building from top to bottom via step-like structures.
The Opera House will house restaurants, galleries, exhibitions, museums, libraries and cinemas, making it an influential art center. The goal is to popularize the space and bring a wide range of audiences closer to traditional and experimental culture from China and around the world.
The design’s aesthetics are inspired by dance and the dynamism of the human body, and its spiral shape gives the impression of movement. The staircase-like path that leads from the entrance plaza to the rooftop offers views of the surrounding area and the entire city of Shanghai, as well as a stage and meeting point for large events or casual everyday gatherings.
The lines that make up the ceiling’s movement are also used in the corridors, three auditoriums and the hall. The interior is made up of oak wood floors and dark red tones, which open up to large windows that provide natural light.
