After laying down some beams with projects in “Terrinha”, Rio de Janeiro architect Maurício Nóbrega decided to acquire a century-old house that, after a long renovation, serves as the family's office and beach house, in one of the villages of Azeitão, in Portugal .

"Located in the city center, in the historic area of the village, the property has been a school, barber shop, housing, and, most likely, is one of the oldest buildings in the city ", explains Maurício.

"After operating as a school, over the last 30 years, the house was subdivided: it served as a barber shop and housing for someone who had a small vineyard and a wine cellar for their own consumption, as it only had two wine presses (which are those grape pressing tanks). ).I found the many uses I kept the barbershop sign so interesting,” he continues.

The architect isolated the entire house on the facade that faces the street and opened the residence to the side that faces the terrace – in fact, a central courtyard –, which emerged naturally when part of the roof, more than a hundred years old, fell and it became a garden .

The house is made up of two buildings : one at the back, where there is a living room and TV, and the front block, with bedrooms and an office. "I carried out a radical renovation internally, but all the pre-existing features of the architecture and facade were maintained", says the architect.

The decoration was a mix of recycling furniture that remained in the property, mining in thrift stores in the region and several smaller pieces were brought from Brazil to reflect the architect's style.

" I found some furniture that was left , like that iron bed, the dining table chairs…The rest was found in stores in Lisbon and thrift stores in Azeitão . The door, for example, was recently placed in the garage and I decided to paint it yellow and relocate it to the dining room , hiding a cupboard and the laundry room behind it.
