Running east to west, the bridge has provided a new connection between Shanghai Municipality and Jiangsu Province since it opened in 2020. “The sinuous plan of both park networks is adopted for the bridge, making it a gentle and formal extension,” said BAU director James Brearley.

"The bridge is a hybrid of several elements that are not normally seen on a bridge, combining vegetation, pavilions and leisure spaces," he says.
The bridge is divided into three graphically marked lanes . Pedestrian and cycle paths run along either side of a central area with trees, plants and elongated seating areas that follow the curve of the bridge.

At the midpoint of the Yuandang Bridge, a large hammered metal canopy supported by thin steel columns covers the pavilion space. Here, seating and a children’s playground are incorporated into a sculptural tunnel of white perforated metal sheets.

Strip lighting at the base of the bridge walkway creates a glowing effect on the lake at night, complemented by lights at the base of the seating areas along the balustrades. Uplighting also creates shadows and reflections in the pavilion playground .
