ABIBOO studio has led the architectural design of a self-sufficient and sustainable city on Mars that could house one million humans . The proposal was based on the latest studies on the red planet and includes five cities , the capital of which has been named “Nüwa” .

Considering the atmospheric conditions, ABIBOO chose the side of a cliff on Mars to build a vertical city , as only in this location would it be possible for residents to have the benefit of access to sunlight and be protected from Martian cosmic radiation, which is lethal for human beings. “If we built buildings like on Earth, the buildings would tend to explode under the pressure,” says Alfredo Muñoz, founder of ABIBOO. “The solar and gamma radiation on Mars has forced us to build spaces that are not directly exposed to the sky .”

Each city accommodates between 200,000 and 250,000 people and follows the same urban strategy. Abalos City, for example, is located at the North Pole to leverage access to the ice, while Marineris City is located in the largest canyon in the solar system.

In the valley, specific structures house hospitals, schools and universities, sports and cultural activities, commercial areas and train stations that communicate with the space shuttle. An artificial mountain created with additional material extracted from the excavations acts as a visual frame for the city and contains auxiliary power, storage and parking systems for space vehicles and trucks within the city.

A human settlement on Mars also requires structures to fulfill the essential functions of air, water, and food production. In Nüwa and its adjacent cities, all architectural constructions include additional safety features to regulate internal atmospheric pressure and provide refuge zones for emergency cases.

Crops would be grown in agricultural modules with a CO2-enriched environment that would not be breathable for humans. As a result, operational tasks in these facilities would be automated. To increase crop efficiency , SONet's team of astrobiology experts opted to a hydroponic system that requires less water and space than other methods based on above-ground crops .

After a short initial period of capital investment and sourcing from Earth, this urban development on the Red Planet will grow on its own and in a sustainable manner. All the materials needed to build the city are obtained on Mars by processing carbon and other minerals. .

The project is part of a scientific effort organized by The Mars Society and developed by SONet , an international team of scientists and academics. Construction is expected to begin in 2054 , with the Mars Mars being habitable by 2100 .
