New York studio
SHoP Architects – the same studio responsible for the
city’s thinnest building – has completed its latest
residential project : the first skyscraper in the
Brooklyn borough of NYC.
Standing
93 stories tall, 325 meters tall and
housing 500 apartments , Brooklyn Tower features an intricate black and
bronze cladding on its exterior with
blackened stainless panels running from the top of the tower to the bottom.
"We wanted to make sure that no matter where you were standing, you could
see it from Brooklyn," says
Greg Pasquarelli , the firm's principal, who emphasizes that the project is indeed the Empire State Building of Brooklyn. With a larger base design, the tower
tapers , drawing attention to the smaller peaks as it narrows toward the top.
The base is covered in
white marble , reflecting
art deco , and darkens as it rises.
The tower also features several "
wind floors " throughout its length that allow
strong gusts of wind to pass through without rocking the massive structure. According to New York magazine
Curbed , one of the
highest wind floors was equipped with a
basketball court .
Inside, the
Dimes Saving Bank 's
art deco design was carried through many of the public spaces, including
Krista Ninivaggi's lobby design.
