Pontal Museum nominated for the 2022 Mies Crown Hall Americas Award

The new headquarters of theMuseu do Pontal, in Rio de Janeiro, designed by the Minas Gerais firmArquitetos Associados, was nominated for the2022 Mies Crown Hall Americas Award(MCHAP), promoted by the Illinois Institute of Technology , in Chicago.

Created in 2012, the award is biennial and recognizes excellence in architectural works built in the Americas . Important factors for nomination for the award are: the impact of the building on the physical environment and communities and its ability to improve the places where we live.Created in 1976, with almost ten thousand works by 300 artists, the Pontal Museum is a reference in Brazilian popular art , with the largest collection of its kind, and itsrelevance recognized by UNESCO.

After operating for more than three decades in an old mansion located in Recreio dos Bandeirantes, amidst remarkable geography and a lush natural landscape, the museum gained a new headquarters .
The new building, designed by Arquitetos Associados , was designed withsustainability in mind and is located on a14,000 m2 plot of land that is consolidated and free from flooding, providing security for the rare and unique collection of the Museu do Pontal.

Based on a rigorous study of the sun's path throughout the year and the wind regime, the building with straight, simple and elegant lines has an eight-meter ceiling height, windows with sunshades ( brise-soleil ) and ventilation. cross-links, which ensure that only 30% of the building needs to use air conditioning, also contributing to the reductionof polluting gas emissions .

The project also sought to provide as much natural lighting as possible, reuse rainwater for the gardens and selective collection of all waste.The land covers10,000 m2 of green area, with landscaping designed by the Burle Marx Office , with tens of thousands of seedlings of73 native Brazilian species, from fruit trees and tropical vegetation to caatinga landscapes .
