The memorial that pays tribute to the victims of the collapse of Dam I in Brumadinho and that, at the same time, provides visitors with a sensitive, individual and shared experience in a welcoming space is already under construction. The project signed by Gustavo Penna Arquiteto & Associados , from CASACOR , involved the participation of the entire local community to become a place of belonging , identification and collective interest.

With the final adjustments of the executive stage, the work has already completed the earthmoving phase of the land and is scheduled to be inaugurated in January 2023. The planting of 272 yellow ipês is part of the project. The number is a tribute to the people who lost their lives in the 2019 tragedy.

Alongside the original grove, the ipês will color the scene as an example of overcoming: their leaves, which are abundant in the summer, a period when there is a lack of shade; and which disappear in the winter, a season that calls for heat and light; and, when the drought tightens, the ipês fill with flowers covering the canopy and the ground. Poetic observation is present in the initial route, in the architecture of the building and in several details of the memorial.

In this space, the luminous points on the ceiling , a contrast between light and dark, speak of the day that has not yet dawned, but also evoke the belief that there may still be a possible path.

Every January 25th , at exactly 12:28 pm, a beam of light will cut through the air and illuminate a druse of crystals, a set of jewels arranged by nature. On the side walls of the large open hall are the names of each of the people who have passed away , written in a unique typography created by type designer Daniel Sabino . They appear, one by one, as you walk along – like recorded stories . on these lateral surfaces.

In the Space of Memories , the slanted walls, the inflections in the ceiling and the floor itself serve as support for mapped projections, generating an impactful experience . At the exit, another impact: a suspended sculpture , like a large head that feels and cries. The water creates a veil over the concrete walls, behind which are the remaining segments of the victims.
At the viewpoint, at the end of the trail, you can see the landscape of the valley ; a surface that has been hit and stained by mud. Long, this lake reflects the sky and holds longing. On the horizon, a new silence is born, the idea of continuity, which looks to the future with hope.
