The world's largest new museum dedicated to astronomy in Shanghai, China, designed by Ennead Architects , creates an immersive experience that puts visitors in direct contact with astronomical phenomena. Designed to reflect the shapes and geometry within the universe, the museum's architecture has no straight lines or right angles.

"The design concept for the museum was to abstractly embody in architecture some of the fundamental laws of astrophysics that are the rule in space," explained Ennead Architects design partner Thomas J Wong.

The architects designed the building around three distinct architectural forms , each derived from the movement of bodies within the universe: the inverted dome, the planetarium sphere, and the Oculus , which act as functional astronomical instruments, tracking the Sun, Moon, and the stars.

The sphere houses the planetarium , which is submerged in the building. With minimally visible support, it evokes the illusion of lightness or antigravity.

"Another striking moment within the museum occurs with the sphere's weightless suspension , gradually revealed as one approaches the atrium and visually defying any sense of gravity," Wong said.

The Inverted Dome is a large inverted glass tension structure that sits atop the building's central atrium at the roofline, allowing visitors to occupy the center of the glass courtyard with an unobstructed view of the sky.

Thomas J Wong hopes the building will complement the exhibits, helping visitors understand the Universe. "Part of what was driving our thinking when developing the design for the Shanghai Astronomy Museum was how we could complement the gallery content and create a building that would make people more aware of the sky above - a building that would not just house exhibits about the space, but put visitors in direct engagement with the stars ," he explains.
