It's not yet summer in New York, but the sunny and green atmosphere is already evident with the official opening of Little Island , the public park built over the Hudson River by Heatherwick Studio. The "small island" has barely opened but is already considered an architectural icon of the city , with 280 concrete piles and a total area of 2.4 acres that support the park and performance venue.

The project reused the remaining wooden pilings from the old Pier 54 , which was located on the site, as a way to preserve marine life and also house the 132 concrete "tulips" that make up the park's structure. The shape of each tulip is unique and has a different weight-bearing capacity to hold onto the ground, lawns, gazebos and trees.

Two bridges connect Little Island to the Chelsea neighborhood on Manhattan's West Side, near the southern end of the High Line. When observed from the outside, the park creates an undulating platform , formed by the concrete columns that have been placed at different levels.

More than 400 species of plants and 100 types of trees are part of the project, which block the air current coming from the river to offer more comfort to people walking through the park. In addition, a series of lawns take over the area so visitors can sunbathe in the summer.

Furthermore, the space also has three performance venues , including the amphitheater, which has wooden benches and capacity for 700 people. There is also a central space with capacity for 3,500 people and a more intimate stage for 200 people.
