A controversial question surrounds July 1st : is this the official date of World Architecture Day? If you’ve asked Google this, you’re probably in a quandary – but we’re here to explain!
What do historical records say?
World Architecture Day was established in 1949 with a worldwide celebration scheduled for July 1st , as at least the oldest records that exist claim. However, in 1996 , the International Union of Architects (UIA) , which represents architects and urban planners from all over the world, changed the initial date to always take place on the first Monday of October , coinciding with World Habitat Day , founded by the UN in 1986. Therefore, the misunderstanding of this date still persists, because many countries continue to celebrate World Architecture Day on the original date, that is, July 1st. The celebration of World Architecture Day, here in Brazil, officially takes place on the first Monday of October , according to the Brazilian Architecture Council (CAU/BR) and the Brazilian Institute of Architects (IAB).
