Nothing like the pleasure of enjoying a well-deserved rest in a country house , even better in a space full of cosiness and super warm. This was the proposal from New York-based firm Desai Chia Architecture to build a house on top of a charred cedar hill in Cornwall, Connecticut.

The project featured large windows that offer a stunning view of nature and facilitate cross ventilation within the spaces. The house is named Ledge House and sits on a site occupied by a large hillside rock hundreds of thousands of years ago, when the nearby Appalachian Mountains were forming.

The house has a generous 223 m² of total area. A highlight is the facade entirely covered in darkened carbonized cedar, resulting from a Japanese technique called shou sugi ban. The cover is made of aluminum. "The clients asked us to design a home that resonates with the history of the Connecticut Valley, with a material palette that is environmentally friendly in a challenging location due to a large rock overhang," said Desai Chia Architecture.
The house was made on a single floor, and for this the architects removed a cabin present inside the property. The foundation was expanded and gave the house a more intimate appearance, in addition to helping to reduce the cost and waste of the construction process .

Outside, a wooden deck was incorporated to create a leisure space where visitors can enjoy views of the valley. To bring even more comfort, a table and chairs for a picnic were added.

While the exterior of the Ledge House has a black facade , the interior has an interesting contrast of light wood and lots of white. The house has an open-plan living room and kitchen. The master bedroom is situated at one end of the house, while the two smaller bedrooms are at the other. "The social area between the rooms allows residents and their guests to merge and socialize in an open, elevated space, which connects via the overhang to a terrace in the forest and another in the valley," say the project's architects.
