In the search for solutions that value natural lighting and prioritize ventilation and the comfort of spaces, skylights stand out as a functional and creative architectural tool. Architect Raphael Wittmann, responsible for the Rawi Architecture + Design office, shared incredible tips on how to make the most of skylights. Check out the full interview below: CASACOR: What spaces do you suggest placing skylights in? Raphael Wittmann: Skylights are ideal for spaces that require more natural light and ventilation, such as corridors, circulation areas, bathrooms, kitchens, and indoor patios. These places tend to be poorly lit or have little ventilation, and the skylight can be the solution for more comfort and visual spaciousness. In areas with high ceilings, such as living rooms or halls, I recommend skylights to create a light and shadow effect. CC: What materials are recommended for making a skylight? RW: The most recommended materials for skylights include laminated glass, tempered laminated glass, or wire glass, which offer safety and allow light to pass through. In metal structures, I suggest aluminum or steel for support, due to their durability and resistance to weather. In some cases, we can also opt for polycarbonate, which can be a lighter and more economical alternative, especially for projects that require greater thermal insulation. CC: What are the most common types of skylights for residences? RW: We can highlight three main types:
  • Fixed skylights: They do not have openings, making them ideal for constant lighting.
  • Ventilated skylights: They have opening systems that allow air to enter, improving the ventilation of the projects.
  • Tube skylights: Recommended for smaller spaces, such as bathrooms or closets, they capture sunlight through a reflective tube and direct it inside.
CC: What are the benefits of skylights for the home? RW: They enhance natural lighting, reduce the need for constant artificial light during the day, and create unique visual effects with sunlight. Additionally, they improve ventilation, especially in models with openings that allow the exchange of warm air and the entry of fresh air. This contributes to a more comfortable and healthy project, with better air quality and a greater sense of spaciousness.
