A structure of 40,000 m², marked by cobogós, hanging gardens, and generous openings, will shape the
Library of Knowledge, a project by
Francis Kéré in Rio de Janeiro.
Pritzker of 2022, Kéré is preparing his first work in South America, designed to function as a

The construction will be implemented in the
surroundings of the Terreirão do Samba, near the monument to Zumbi dos Palmares and connected to the initiatives of Pequena África. The institution will be dedicated to
housing memory, meetings, and learning practices – reinforcing the value of
popular culture as an intellectual heritage of the city!
Project by Francis Kéré
The project by Francis Kéré for the Library of Knowledge is structured to unite
monumentality and
lightness. The building will use pilotis, brises, and cobogós to filter light and create cross ventilation, in addition to
hanging gardens that will establish
continuity with the projects external. The proposal seeks to create a sense of
permeability and welcoming, a characteristic hallmark of Kéré’s work.

In the center of the terracotta construction, a
circular tower with four floors will be open at the top to allow an abundant influx of
natural light. This structure alludes to both the
relationship of Rio de Janeiro with its natural formations and the
symbolic role of trees in African communities, especially those in Burkina Faso, where Gando, the architect's hometown, is located.

The architectural program includes a
theater,
amphitheater,
study rooms,
community kitchens,
areas for exhibitions, and
collections dedicated to memory,
popular manifestations, and
biodiversity. Gardened terraces, covered courtyards, and a café are also planned. The opening date of the institution has not been announced.
Praça Onze Maravilha
The implementation of the Library of Knowledge is part of the urban program
Praça Onze Maravilha, which includes a series of interventions aimed at transforming the Sambódromo region. The initiative will involve investments of approximately
R$ 1.75 billion and will integrate
urban improvements,
cultural, and
structural enhancements to the surroundings.

Additionally, Praça Onze Maravilha should receive new cultural facilities, including the
Cultural Center Rio-África, designed by architect Marcos Damon, and the
Port Park, signed by
Duda Porto. The presence of these projects will reinforce the intention to revitalize the territory, valuing its history and expanding
spaces for cultural enjoyment.

The Library of Knowledge is also one of the main legacies of the
Rio Capital of World Book agenda, strengthening
public and community libraries and expanding access to knowledge. The local will operate as a
anchor equipment of this new cultural network – connecting existing initiatives and stimulating the flow of residents and visitors throughout the region.
