One of India's most influential 21st century architects, he is the 45th Pritzker Prize laureate and the first Indian to receive it.

Architect Balkrishna Doshi is the winner of the 2018 Pritzker Prize, the most important award in architecture. The Indian architect has a portfolio spanning more than 70 years, including collaborations with Le Cobusier and Louis Kahn. Balkrishna Doshi, one of the most influential architects of the 20th century, XXI from India, is the 45th Pritzker Prize laureate and the first Indian to receive it. 
After graduating in Mumbai, Doshi began his architectural career in Europe. He joined the Parisian office of Le Corbusier and went on to supervise the construction of some of his mentor's works in Chandigarh and Ahmedabad. 
The jury included Richard Rogers, Sejima Kazuyo, Glenn Murcutt and Martha Thorne. In the citation justifying the architect's selection as the winner, the jury stated that "Balkrishna Doshi has consistently demonstrated the objectives of the Pritzker Architecture Prize to the highest degree. He has been practicing the art of architecture, demonstrating substantial contributions to humanity, for more than 60 years. By awarding him the prize this year, the Pritzker recognizes his exceptional architecture reflected in more than a hundred buildings he has designed, his commitment and his dedication to his country and the communities he served, his influence as a teacher, and the outstanding example he set for professionals and students around the world throughout his long career." 
Doshi will receive a medal of honor at the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto, Canada, on May 16, 2018. The international award, modeled on the Nobel Prize, was established in 1979 to honor the work of living architects. Last year, the award was awarded to the Spanish architects of RCR Arquitectes: Rafael Aranda, Carme Pigem and Ramon Vilalta. The architects Alejandro Aravena, Frei Otto, Rem Koolhaas, Zaha Hadid, Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa of SANAA and Toyo Ito are among the recent winners.
