About the construction of Pia Chaves Barcellos
Built in 1923, the historic building chosen to host the event had the objective of
welcoming and educating orphaned and needy girls , and remained in operation through the Association of Franciscan Sisters until 2005. Conceived by Mrs. Ilza Chaves Barcellos and her brothers-in-law, the The building is a
true monument in honor of her husband , Pedro, who was known in Porto Alegre society for his benevolence, assisting several pious institutions such as the Santa Casa de Misericórdia and the Pão dos Pobres. As Ilza and Pedro had no children, the The couple dedicated themselves tirelessly to helping needy children, supporting and sustaining the actions of congregations focused on education, such as the Franciscan Sisters.
On the miter-shaped Baroque pediment, a small wooden and copper bell tower displayed a cross with two crossed keys, which revealed to whom the homage was paid. On the main entrance door, sculpted angels welcome and greet those who enter the building, in its atrium leads to an
