Amsterdam opens world’s first 3D printed bridge

The bridge has a network of state-of-the-art sensors that allow it to monitor changes such as vibration, temperature and public interaction.

A 3D-printed pedestrian bridge designed by Joris Laarman and built by Dutch robotics company MX3D has opened in Amsterdam, Netherlands, six years after the project was first launched.

Located on the Oudezijds Achterburgwal canal in the city's Red Light District, the bridge is 12 meters long, weighs 4.9 tons and was manufactured from stainless steel rods by six-axis robotic arms with welding equipment. The print took about six months to complete.

Its curved S-shaped form and balustrades with lattice-like perforations were designed using parametric modeling software.

The team behind the project said the technique shows how 3D printing technology can lead to the construction of more efficient and sustainable structures . “By stepping up our game and willingness to make changes as designers and engineers, we can bring the innovation needed to make a difference in the environment,” says engineer Stijn Joosten.
