The architect duo Hannah Cabral and Monique Pampolha from Studio MH Arquitetura return to CASACOR Rio de Janeiro in 2023 with the Oriel Suite , a space that offers an alternative way of reconnecting with the natural environment.

Dedicated to relaxation, the suite combines neutral and soft tones with organic textures to evoke natural elements and thus bring greater well-being to the resident. With the proposal of pause , rest and contemplation , the sensorial project focuses on internal coverings – wall and ceiling – in the Van Gogh finish by Dell Anno, enhancing the integration of the spaces.

"Living in big cities has made people busier, more anxious and depressed. The world has become sick due to a lack of care , attention and affection," says Hannah. "We designed the Oriel Suite to be an environment for pause and rest , causing a slowdown," adds Monique.

The décor is contemporary, with nationally designed furniture and works of art . But the main design element is the large muxarabi panel that surrounds the entire space, creating an environment that protects those inside, while also allowing the greenery to be appreciated outside. The piece functions almost like a living work, which spreads its plot across the space, forming designs that change depending on the light .

Furthermore, the mashrabiya panel revives a traditional aspect of the building , capable of making the external and internal environment more flexible. This design element is also present in the main house of the Rio de Janeiro exhibition – which the suite overlooks – thus establishing a connection between the two buildings .

The name Oriel means “ the lord is light ” and alludes to the play of light and shadow provided by the mashrabiya .
Another highlight is the scarce use of very strong or artificial visual stimuli, which could cause agitation, prioritizing light colors and organic textures that refer to natural elements.

The view from the interior of the suite to the main house also reflects on the use of space and time. " It contrasts the ephemerality of this contemporary structure with an imposing traditional building . It highlights the importance of rescuing affective memory for the preservation of heritage and cultures, so that the new and the old are not valued to the detriment of the other, but coexist and collaborate . A more sustainable future lies in the integration of both and in maintaining human contact with nature," explain architects Monique and Hannah.
