In this edition of CASACOR São Paulo , Artificial Intelligence (AI) was applied to the design of three projects to expand the possibilities of expressing the ideas presented by each of them. Using this technological resource, the architects of the Ocupação Terreiro , Acalanto e Encontros and Ristorantino Caffè environments designed new images, textures, symbols, visual effects and even visible sounds. In the art space-installation Ocupação Terreiro , artificial intelligence was used to question the distortion of black representation within the digital universe. “The prompts that are generated by AI have a very large distortion of the physical and black symbologies”, explains Alexandre Salles , leader of Estúdio Tarimba and architect who designed the space. Together with designer Indio San , Salles worked to create an image in the space that was truly representative and established a counterpoint to the lack of black presence in AI-generated media. The result of this process was the projection of the Pretas Velhas and the Orixás do Futuro , images that carry with them a provocation, says the architect: “The objective was to question what kind of image we think or want for the future , especially in this black context”.

Salles continues his metalinguistic analysis of AI on one of the walls of the space, which he characterizes as a code of the future . The wall was generated through prompts fed from the research carried out by the architect to design the environment at CASACOR. “The idea is for it to be precisely this abstract code, as if the future were bringing us a message,” he says. To this end, Salles centralized the phrase “without a leaf, there is no orixá” — which he describes as a “trigger phrase” and interprets as a call to environmental and spiritual issues.

Artificial Intelligence also appears as an expression of representation in the Acalantos e Encontros environment , designed by architect Bruno Moraes. In this case, technology is present in the piece that gives the project its name: the Acalanto rug , which brings an innovation to design by being an indigenous song frozen in tapestry .

The use of AI allowed the architect and his team at BMA Studio to transform the sound waves of the music into visual waves , which they then superimposed and printed onto the carpet design. “After the fragments of the music were removed, we put the sound waves together in software to visualize how one wave would look next to the other, and the model was made with perfect curves that represent the separate sound waves,” explains Bruno.

First, images were generated using artificial intelligence to obtain research references, which allowed the architects to explore a range of materials and volumes. “This gave us ideas for the design and creation of our project,” say architects and interior designers Dani Guardini and Adriano Stancati.

But the 3D effect created on the ceiling came later, when AI was used to design the ceiling, created using Rhino software with the Grasshopper plugin. “We generated and regulated prompts and codes according to the visual effect we were looking for,” Dani and Adriano explain. This is how the architects created the volumetric grid design , which gave rise to the iconic shape of the Ristorantino Caffè ceiling.
